How to Frame a Walkman: Turning a Vintage Player into Wall Art

Framing a vintage Walkman turns a forgotten gadget into a piece of playable art. Here's how we do it — and how to choose the right frame for yours.

A vintage Walkman doesn’t have to sit in a drawer. Framed properly, it becomes a piece of playable wall art — one that sounds as good as it looks and makes a genuinely unique gift.

No time to build one yourself? Our Sony Walkman WM-EX610 Cassette Frame comes framed and ready to display.

Here’s the process we use in our studio, plus what to look for if you’re choosing a framed player for your own wall.

Step 1: Restore the Player First

Never frame a player that doesn’t work. New belts, a clean tape path, and a tested mechanism matter just as much on a wall as they do in a hand. A restored player can be taken out of its frame and played whenever you like; a dead one is just decoration.

Framed, not glued: the player is mounted so it still plays.

Step 2: Choose the Right Frame

The frame should complement the player, not fight it. We use solid wood frames in three finishes:

  • Cherry wood — warm, classic, suits 80s models perfectly
  • Walnut wood — deeper and richer, great for dark-faced players
  • Pine wood — light and natural, a modern look

Most players are available in an 8-inch or 9-inch frame size, so you can match the piece to your wall and room.

Step 3: Protect It

Every frame gets an acrylic dust cover. Acrylic is lighter and safer than glass for wall-mounted pieces, and it keeps dust off the player while leaving the design fully visible.

Step 4: Hang It Like Art

Framed players are wall-ready out of the box — no extra mounting hardware required. They work beautifully alone or in a small gallery wall with records, posters, and other music memorabilia.
