The thinnest Walkman you’ll ever hold

The WM-EX622 is Sony’s mid-90s engineering flex: a full cassette player thinner than most phones of its era. It was the machine you carried in your front pocket without noticing — until you pressed play. For anyone who grew up in the 90s, this is the sound of a summer day.

Our example has been hand-restored and test-played, so it works exactly the way it did in 1995.

WM-EX622 vs WM-EX610

If you are choosing between the two most popular Sony frames in our collection, the difference is simple. The WM-EX610 is the colourful design statement — the one people notice from across the room. The WM-EX622 is the engineering icon: one of the thinnest cassette players Sony ever made. We recommend the EX-622 for collectors who care about the mechanism, and the EX-610 for those who care about the look.

What happens to every WM-EX622 before it ships

Every frame starts as a complete WM-EX622 that has already lived a life. We take the whole machine apart:

  • Full teardown — the mechanism and tape transport, the head assembly and the circuit board all come out of the shell.
  • Repair — every function is brought back to spec.
  • Clean and rebuild — the transport is cleaned, the mechanism re-lubricated, and the assembly mounted onto the backboard.
  • Frame and test again — the finished piece is set into solid wood, and played once more before it’s packed.

Teardown to packed frame takes 10–15 days per unit.

The belt on this model

The drive belt decides whether a Walkman plays at the right speed, and the EX622 is fussy about it.

This model needs a 0.6 mm round-profile belt. The thicker 0.7 mm belt that comes in most generic kits — the common “105” size — doesn’t sit correctly in this pulley, and the symptom is unstable speed. It’s the most common mistake we see on tired EX622s.

We fit a fresh 0.6 mm belt to every unit and check the speed before it goes into the frame.

How we test playback

We test with a factory-recorded music cassette rather than a test tape, because speed errors are obvious on music and easy to miss on anything else.

Every unit plays 30 minutes continuous, and we check five things:

  • Playback at the correct speed
  • Fast-forward, end to end
  • Rewind, end to end
  • Pause and resume
  • Track search — skipping between songs

A unit that fails any one of these doesn’t get framed.

Framed as wall art, ready to hang

Mounted in a solid wood frame with a clear display window. Slide it out, play your old mixtape, slide it back. It sits perfectly on a desk, shelf or gallery wall.

Who this gift is for

The person who still has a shoebox of cassettes under the bed. The engineer who appreciates how they fit a motor, heads and a tape drive into something this thin. Anyone who says “they don’t make things like they used to.”

Bluetooth upgrade (optional)

Available on request — stream from a phone while keeping the tape deck fully functional.
